Sebamed offer a range of skin and body care products with a slight acidic pH ...
of 5.5, which helps to protect the skin's acid mantle. The acid mantle is a fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin which acts as a barrier to ward off bacteria and other contaminants that might penetrate the skin.
Years before Sebamed launched, Dr. med. Heinz Maurer discovered the risks against the delicate acid mantle and therefore searched for a cleansing product adjusted to the physiological pH value of 5.5 of healthy skin. In 1957, Dr. Maurer introduced the first "soap-free cleansing bar" - based on tensides that corresponded to the skin pH value of 5.5 of healthy skin.
Sebamed was eventually born in 1967, along with Dr. Maurer’s ideas for medicine products being accepted worldwide by pharmacies and approved greatly amongst dermatologists as the products also allowed for the washing of infected and irritated skin - something which had not been possible beforehand.
Sebamed’s range is constantly being extended - alongside the classic cleansing products, the delicate skin of babies and the high demands of stressed skin are catered for, with all products still based on the concept of stabilising the acid mantle using the pH value of 5.5.
