Summer only means one thing: it’s time to let our hair down. Weddings, festivals, garden parties - the list goes on, and so do our endless hair questions. With this new shining season, you’ll need all the help you can get to take your tresses from lacklustre to show stealing. Unsure on whether to take the plunge with that 80s mullet, wow with wedding hairstyles, or protect your strands from a (hopefully) long hot summer? You name it, Virtue has the answer. And as always, we’re more than happy to help.

Each of these staple summer tips comes from stylist, Virtue Educator and all-round hair guru, Jonny Eagland. You can find more of his hot takes over on his Instagram @jonnyeagland.

What are the hottest haircuts and colours this summer?

There’s so many we’ll be seeing! 70’s fringes, either heavy, full round or square, just like Jane birkin, Farah Fawcett, and Bridgette Bardot. And then there’s mullets, as we’ve seen recently on Miley Cyrus, or the modern shag that Billie Eilish has been sporting. Mid-length bobs with middle partings are also on the up, as well as 90s layers on longer lengths - think Jennifer Anniston and Cindy Crawford.

In terms of colour trends, we’ll be seeing red hair across the colour spectrum, plenty of blonde balayage and also strawberry highlights.

It’s occasion season, how can we get wedding hairstyles right?

The satin airwrap is the ultimate hair tool at the minute, as well as embracing your natural texture with the clever use of products and getting that condition healthy again. For a simple but stylish effect, practise your best ponytail for an off the shoulder look.

We need help! How can we get bridesmaid hairstyles that won’t make us cringe when revisiting our photos later?

Work with your natural texture, don’t force it. You’re not all supposed to be identical looking. Dresses yes, but the simplest of styles well executed on your bridesmaids hair will take your photos to the next level. Think natural waves with a matte or polished finish. If the hair is straight and stubborn and won’t hold, you could iron it super sleek and bring it all around to one side.

How can we shine through festival season without reaching for the glitter?

The best look for festival season is, without doubt, the ponytail! Keeping your hair up and away when you're feeling fancy is ideal. Also, when it’s a little greasy you can get that ultra-sleek look.

Alternatively, if you have a natural curly texture, embrace it and go more defined with more volume. Use a curling tong on certain areas and get the texture spray in there. Equally, get your nimble fingers to work and do those braids as they are also a great way of getting your hair festival ready!

Does our hair need sun protection this summer?

Yes absolutely! Certain products have both SPF and UV protection; frizz protectors and also scalp sprays can protect against sunburn, which can be extremely painful. All of these can be used when relaxing in the sun this year.

Which products are worth their weight in our luggage this holiday season?
