Founder and CEO of Huda Beauty, meet Huda Kattan, our go-to girl for embracing - and creating - unique beauty.

Our holiday campaign celebrates unique beauty, what does that mean to you?

For me, true beauty lies in our differences, so we need to embrace the things that are uniquely us and love the skin that we’re in. I would love all women to feel beautiful for who they truly are in their rawest states.

Your beauty has become your brand, have you always embraced your look?

Where I grew up in the US, there wasn't anybody who looked like me and it was a real challenge to feel a sense of belonging. I struggled with this feeling of inadequacy and that I didn’t deserve to feel beautiful. I started the Huda Beauty blog to share my experiences and tips as a makeup artist, but also to inspire others. I wanted everyone to feel welcome in beauty and realised that I was making a difference, which inspired me to start a makeup brand.

How do you find self-love and how do you celebrate it?

It is so important to take time out for myself and just enjoy life - lockdown helped me to do that. I was always going at a million miles an hour and literally never stopped. I stepped away from social media, spent time with my family, took bubble baths, organised my new house, enjoyed lots of afternoon tea and I felt like I could be ‘Hoodie’ again (my nickname). I love to work hard, but I’ve definitely realised the need for a healthy balance.

What characteristic, physical or otherwise, do you love the most?

I’ve learnt to love myself and feel comfortable in my own skin. I’m even braving no makeup more and more and I’m really enjoying it. Beauty is both external and internal - being empowered, being kind and believing in yourself will always be beautiful.

Is there a secret to turning your passion into your business?

If makeup or skincare is your passion, then pour your heart and soul into starting your own line. Research constantly, go online, to the library, to factories, try as many other brands and products as you can. Literally live and breathe beauty and gain all the insights you need before setting up your brand.  And then be patient! Creating your own brand takes a lot of dedication, time and investment, but the joy of doing it is so fulfilling.

What does makeup mean to you?

Post-pandemic, we have developed a better sense of self and confidence experimenting with makeup.  I’m a firm believer in its transformative abilities. It really allows you to be who you want to be at any moment, with the option to be a different you just moments later.

With parties back on the calendar, what should we be adding to our makeup bag?

Prepping the skin is super important, because having a good base means flawless makeup! Wishful Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub is amazing. Makeup staples should be our Rose Quartz Eyeshadow Palette – ultra-wearable and super impactful, it has the most amazing rosy pinks, magical metallics and glittery powders. Define your eyes with our Quick N Easy Liner and the Legit Lashes Mascara. Lastly, slick on our Rose Quartz Silk Balm for the ultimate party pout.

What does 2022 look like for you and Huda Beauty?

Professionally, I'm so excited to unveil all of the products we've been working on at Huda Beauty, Wishful and Kayali. We work hard listening to our community and creating what we know they’ll love. I'm always genuinely bursting with excitement to see what my beauty lovers think. Personally, 2022 will continue to be about inner growth and acceptance. I’m looking forward to seeing where my journey takes me next!
