7 Ways To Enhance Your Curls

ICYMI: More and more of us are ditching the styling tools and embracing our natural curls and waves. Textured locks can be tricky to manage, but with brands creating tailor-made haircare for curly and coily strands, it’s officially time to make the most of what nature gave you. Here are our curly hair tips to help keep your tresses healthy and bouncy.

1Ditch the shampoo

You may like the squeaky-clean feeling that traditional shampoos give your hair but the chemical laden formulas will only weigh down your curls and promote frizz. If you have wavy hair then you can still include a shampoo but use one that’s sulphate free, Shea Moisture’s Moisture Retention Shampoo is a great one and as curly hair is naturally dry, try to limit washing to once or twice a week.

2 Co-Wash

The idea behind co-washing is that you use only conditioner when you wash your hair and the result is softer, more manageable curls. If you are still using a shampoo then make sure to use a conditioner BEFORE and after shampooing. Curly haired model Jasmine Sanders uses the Moroccanoil Curl Cleansing Conditioner. Co-washing every 7-10 days is recommended for curly and coily haired girls – those with super tight curls can wet hair with just water in between co-washing days.

3 Condition

A good conditioner is a curl's best friend. After cleansing your hair (with a conditioner) take the time to work more conditioner evenly through your hair. Try leaving it on for up to 15 minutes depending on how much moisture you require and then rinse out. For even more nourishment, comb some Shea Moisture Leave-in Conditioner though your lengths.

4 Plop

Now, this does not sound the most glamorous of tasks, but it’s an important one if you want really defined curls. Instead of rigorously wringing out your hair with a towel or furiously attacking your head with the hair dryer, take the time to tip all of your hair forward and carefully tap out all of the excess moisture from each curl with a towel.

5 Style

Whilst your hair is still flipped over, use a smoothing gel or curl defining cream. Scrunch some Shea Moisture Curling Gel Souffle through very wet hair, or for a lightweight bounce and defined shape Jasmine uses the Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream. Work product from the tips to the scalp, go layer by layer leaving the hair closest to your face till last.

6 Refresh

While styling tools and lots of product aren’t recommended for enhancing natural curls, if you find that your coils are dropping throughout the day, use a specialised treatment like Moroccanoil Curl Re-energizing Spray to reactivate and rejuvenate curls.

7 Reduce friction

With legions of dedicated fans, the Slip Pure Silk Pillowcase is a worthwhile investment for overnight hair healing. Helping to reduce friction as you toss and turn throughout the night, it’s gentle on your curls so hair looks more defined between washes. Likewise, sleeping in a SILKE London Hair Wrap helps protect hair from moisture loss so you can wake up with more manageable tresses.
